The topic for today is pulling the slack out of the bar in the deadlift.

Getting tighter in the deadlift is deadlifting strength. It’s the limiting factor for most lifters and you can't ever have too much of it.

In the episode we'll talk about what tightness in the deadlift actually means, some heuristics for its assessment, a lot of different coaching cues that we use, exercise selections to build tightness in the deadlift as well as ways of organising your training to support some of these technical goals.

Enjoy!

Welcome back to the Reactive Training Systems podcast.

In today’s episode Mike Tuchscherer and John Garafano talk to RTS Coach and World Champion Mark Robb about the mindset tactics that he's adopted over his 40 years of training experience, to become the kind of lifter who's still setting lifetime PRs into his 60’s.

Because injuries can be such a significant derailment to our progress, Mark shares his experience with one injury in particular, which after decades of experience under the bar ended up keeping him out of the gym for almost six years.

This conversation centres around how to adjust goals after being injured, how to reframe some of these scenarios, and not so much about fixing the injury but about how to cope with it mentally.

We're going to talk about long term versus short term and the techniques and tactics that we found to be effective as coaches and as athletes and that we’ve used for accepting our circumstances.

We'll also talk about the value of perspective, about mentorship, overshooting, versus undershooting, and quite a few other things.

We hope you enjoy!

Welcome back to the RTS podcast. Today, RTS coaches John Garafano and Mike Tuchscherer are talking to Shane Martin of Smart Lifts.

Shane is a bench presser and a powerlifter. He's also a coach, who also happens to be president of the Canadian powerlifting, the largest Federation in Canada.

Shane is someone who has a reputation for being a technician in powerlifting equipment. If you're not familiar, then this podcast would be a great way to understand a little bit more of that aspect of our sport. Shane has helped a lot of lifters develop their technical knowledge develop their competency in powerlifting equipment. And because of his track record and his reputation, a while back, we asked Shane, if he would build a course for us about equipped lifting and it's turned out really fantastic. It's available now on the reactive Training Systems website, to those who are interested.

If you are a lifter who's been interested in dabbling in the side of the sport, or if you're a coach that's interested in coaching equipped lifters and maybe you don't have a whole lot of experience with equipped lifting yourself, we definitely recommend that you check it out.

Welcome back to the RTS podcast. This episode is going to be a conversation on how to get started with Emerging Strategies. Mike Tuchscherer will be talking to three of our newest coaches at RTS: Adam, Peter and Hayden.

A question that comes up for us fairly often is how to get started with Emerging Strategies. It's a topic that we're obviously very passionate and very animated about.

If you're listening to this, and you are just getting some first exposure to Emerging Strategies, something that you'll hear us talk about is the Emerging Strategies lecture on the Reactive Training Systems YouTube channel. We have lots and lots of videos that explain Emerging Strategies and various aspects of our programming strategies so definitely go go there and check it out. You'll learn more about kind of the nuts and bolts of how it all works.

If you're ready to really take the plunge and learn all that there is to know about it, you might want check out the course Programming with Emerging Strategies. It's all set up in a way that takes you through the process in a logical way so that you come out the other side knowing how to execute the process and how to apply Emerging Strategies to your clients. You'll understand that there's no such thing as a silver bullet, there's no such thing as an answer that's going to give you the magic individualized program but that doesn't mean that good programming doesn't exist. And you'll have at that point a process for how you can figure out the best program for each of your individual clients. Or if you're training for yourself, how to figure out what is it that you respond best to.

And then, as always, keep in mind that at that www.reactivetrainingsystems.com, if you log in and click on apps, it will take you to a free training log application where you can log your training and run reports on that training for free. The whole point of the app is to help you make better trading decisions and help you understand what weight you should be putting on the bar for your workout today.

Welcome back to the RTS podcast. This episode is a part two of sorts, connecting to the conversation that we had last time about very low RPE training.

Last time, it was the RTS coaches, who gave their take on this topic of growing popularity in powerlifting training.

We mentioned then, that we really wanted to talk to Zack and Josh of Data Driven Strength about this. So we booked it in.

You can think of it as a kind of classic RTS programming discussion, where we dig deep into the weeds and talk about training, cover RPE velocity based training, velocity loss, lots of other programming focused topics, and ultimately, how you get better results from your training and the pros and cons of different approaches.

We believe that this episode will be especially useful for the self coached lifter, of which there are many.

You may have noticed that lately in the powerlifting universe, there has been a trend toward low RPE training.

This trend has been misunderstood by many people, and mischaracterized by others. There are certainly aspects of it that we at RTS agree with, and we find ourselves in support of, and then there are other aspects of it, where we maybe see things a little bit differently.

Since this has been a question that has popped up in our Instagram Q&A's more than once, and it's a bit of a more nuanced conversation, we thought we would record podcasts with the RTS coaches.

Today, you'll be listening to John Garafano, Ross Leppala and Mike Tuchscherer have a conversation about lower RPE training, and ways for you to make use of this in your own training program.

Hope you enjoy.

Aug 9, 2021

Today's conversation is a candid one. Coach Ross, Mike and John talk about the value of coaching. After his recent meet at USAPL Nationals, Ross reflects on his responsibility in executing the training program and Mike reflects on what his role is in helping him get the best results possible.

Aug 4, 2021

Do you need to run a dedicated hypertrophy blocks? Can or should you train your comp lifts in a high rep range running into a meet? What constitutes as a hypertrophy block?

Coach Ross Leppala, John Garafano and Mike Tuchscherer discuss all these questions and more as they sit down to share their perspective on how to program hypertrophy for powerlifters.

Jul 29, 2021

In today's episode, Mike, joined by Ross Leppala, sits down to chat with new RTS coach Peter Lucey.

Peter was a recent hire of ours out of a pool of very highly qualified coaches and we're super excited to have him joining the coaching team here at RTS. Peter is also the head team coach for the Thailand powerlifting team.

In this episode, we talked with Peter, about coaching online versus coaching in person, a really interesting topic and a very important one to consider as an online coach.

There's a lot of advantages and disadvantages to both settings. Understanding what those advantages and disadvantages are for each setting can help the coach and their supportive efforts of the lifter strength journey.

Meet the new RTS Coach: Hayden Pritchard; PhD, International competitor, and veteran coach

New Zealander Hayden Pritchard has his PhD in Strength and Conditioning from AUT where his focus was on tapering strategies. He's competed twice himself at the IPF world level -- and coached lifters to those same championships. Lately he's been focusing on training and coaching Weightlifting, which has given him some unique perspective. He's very well rooted in the Exercise Science literature, but still understands that the most important thing is getting a result for the athlete.

You'll find Hayden to have a positive tone with a can-do attitude. His experience gives him great perspective when helping athletes make decisions.

Having a bad competition prep can be nerve-racking to say the least.

What are you supposed to do when your internal expectations are aren't matching up with the results that you see in the gym leading up to your competition day? What actionable steps can you take to make the most of it?

2021 USAPL Nationals have just gone down and coach Ross Leppala sit down with his coach Mike Tuchscherer and colleague John Garafano to discuss what it's like to go into an important meet after a bad prep.

Have you ever thought about quitting?

If you're like most of us, the thought has probably occurred to you at some point.

With many of us stuck in our homes and facing rapidly changing circumstances, the year 2020 certainly brought us opportunities to question the true reasons that we enjoy our training.

When things get really hard and motivation seems far away, should we always try and add more fuel to the fire? Or can there perhaps at times be a benefit to letting the flames simmer down for a while?

In this episode, RTS coaches Mike Tuchscherer, John Garanfano and Isabella von Weissenberg discuss how to stay engaged in training when things get tough.
