In this episode, your host, RTS Coach, and founder, Mike Tuchscherer is joined by RTS coaches Mark Robb and John Garafano to discuss when someone should consider changing weight classes.
The topic for today is pulling the slack out of the bar in the deadlift.
Getting tighter in the deadlift is deadlifting strength. It’s the limiting factor for most lifters and you can't ever have too much of it.
In the episode we'll talk about what tightness in the deadlift actually means, some heuristics for its assessment, a lot of different coaching cues that we use, exercise selections to build tightness in the deadlift as well as ways of organising your training to support some of these technical goals.
Enjoy!
Welcome back to the RTS podcast. This episode is a part two of sorts, connecting to the conversation that we had last time about very low RPE training.
Last time, it was the RTS coaches, who gave their take on this topic of growing popularity in powerlifting training.
We mentioned then, that we really wanted to talk to Zack and Josh of Data Driven Strength about this. So we booked it in.
You can think of it as a kind of classic RTS programming discussion, where we dig deep into the weeds and talk about training, cover RPE velocity based training, velocity loss, lots of other programming focused topics, and ultimately, how you get better results from your training and the pros and cons of different approaches.
We believe that this episode will be especially useful for the self coached lifter, of which there are many.

Meet the new RTS Coach: Hayden Pritchard; PhD, International competitor, and veteran coach
New Zealander Hayden Pritchard has his PhD in Strength and Conditioning from AUT where his focus was on tapering strategies. He's competed twice himself at the IPF world level -- and coached lifters to those same championships. Lately he's been focusing on training and coaching Weightlifting, which has given him some unique perspective. He's very well rooted in the Exercise Science literature, but still understands that the most important thing is getting a result for the athlete.
You'll find Hayden to have a positive tone with a can-do attitude. His experience gives him great perspective when helping athletes make decisions.
